St John’s on-the-Hill School choir enjoyed an opportunity of a lifetime when they performed with the world’s number 1 brass band, the Cory Band, and the award winning Soul’d As Seen choir at a sensational concert at St Mary’s Church, in Chepstow, on Thursday 17 October.

The evening celebrated iconic movie songs to raise money for the church and St David’s Hospice. St John’s Director of Music, Mr Dave Mitchell, who organised the event, sang a number of songs including Frank Sinatra’s My Way. There was also a wonderful performance of O Mio Babbino Caro from the school’s Head, Mrs Ruth Frett.

The children were thrilled to be among such talented musicians and sang sparkling renditions of Shallow and A Cover is Not the Book to a packed out audience of more than 300 people.

Arranged for the occasion by composer and St John’s music teacher, Mr Chris Bond, the evening ended with a rousing compilation of music from The Greatest Showman.

Mr Dave Mitchell, Director of Music at St John’s on-the-Hill School, said: “It was a sensational evening of music and a wonderful privilege to join the Cory Band, fresh from their recent victory at the National Championships at the Royal Albert Hall. To add to the excitement, it was the first time our pupils have seen their Head perform and they were totally awestruck.”
