Dean Close St John’s has been welcoming the children of our Armed Forces for decades and are proud to have several serving and retired military personnel on our Board of Trustees. Many of our Boarders are from Armed Forces families from all ranks and military disciplines; we have strong historical ties with Beachley Barracks in Chepstow.

All military personnel are entitled to an automatic 20% Armed Forces discount, which is applicable to both Day and Boarding pupils.  In addition to the CEA allowance, further means-tested bursaries are available and the Admissions Team are able to advise you on this.

Pupils can start boarding in Year 3 (age 7) and the School provides continuity of education right through to the end of Sixth Form, with a through journey to Dean Close Senior School, Cheltenham. For parents who are looking for an alternative senior school destination, the Headmaster advises families on suitable schools to suit the family’s needs. He also engages the help of a specialist military educational consultant who helps to facilitate the move at the end of year 8, at no cost to the family.

The St John’s boarding house is a large, comfortable, family home within the St John’s site. The majority of military boarders join our Preparatory School Boarding house for boys and girls in Years 3-6 (age 7-11).  St John’s provides a traditional, full-boarding experience.  Pupils are fully engaged with organised activities, lessons, matches and a programme of Boarding House events on Saturdays and Sundays. Our pastoral teams work very closely with our Houseparents and boarding house staff to provide appropriate support, security and care for children.  If children are sick during term time they are looked after by their house parent in the boarding house until they are well enough to return to school. The School is also very sensitive to the needs of parents who may need to visit at ad-hoc times to fit in with leave when serving far away.  St John’s makes every effort to accommodate the needs of serving parents to have access to their children when they are on leave.

We currently have 157 military boarders across our foundation schools (see for more information).
