Design and Technology is a general academic subject with a hands-on element. It allows pupils to use their creativity to suggest and try out ideas and solve practical problems.
At St John’s pupils are taught Design and Technology from Year 3 in a well-equipped specialist room. At this stage they use ideas from class topics to help generate design ideas. Challenges include ideas from subject areas and from the children themselves, such as exploring structures and making moving toys and design solutions to help others.
Pupils learn to apply their knowledge about materials and their properties in choosing what they might want to make. They also begin to understand the design cycle and the importance of new ideas.
Pupils are encouraged to use ICT in their work, for research and for CAD (Computer Aided Design) and use 3-D printing to explore design concepts. Pupils are also prepared for senior school scholarships, for which we have a very high success rate.
