Beyond St John's

Senior Years - Dean Close School in Cheltenham

As a proud member of the Dean Close Foundation, many pupils progress to Dean Close Senior School, where they are guaranteed a place, provided they meet the curriculum requirements.

Some pupils may already have 11+ scholarships, which continue until they reach 18, while others can apply for 13+ scholarships. Both schools work closely with parents to ensure a smooth transition, encouraging early conversations during the Preparatory School years.

Convenient Access
A direct train link connects Chepstow to Cheltenham in just 40 minutes. Dean Close Senior School is a short walk from Cheltenham station, and St John’s pupils receive a generous discount on the boarding package at Cheltenham.

Progression to other Senior Schools

While many of our pupils go on to Dean Close Senior School, others progress to a wide range of senior schools, including Clifton College, Haberdashers' Monmouth, Wycliffe College, and King’s School, Gloucester.

Many of our pupils are fortunate enough to earn scholarships to senior school. St John's has a strong tradition of Sport and Academic Scholars, and some pupils also gain Drama, Art, or Music Scholarships.

What stands out is how many of our pupils go on to take up leadership positions in their chosen senior schools. A St John’s education provides a solid foundation, with leadership skills that set them up for success in the world beyond.

St John's Alumni

We have Alumni leading the way in fields such as medicine, ecology, policy, and television. Old St Johnians have worked in costume design, written scripts for Doctor Who, and re-rigged the Cutty Sark. One is a Master of Wine, one of only a few in the world. Others are journalists for The Times. There are car restorers, racers, and land speed record engineers; artists, authors, and filmmakers; Majors, barristers, and surgeons. All are as individual and inspiring as our pupils today.
