Reception

A Nurturing and Stimulating Environment

At Dean Close St John’s Reception, pupils enjoy an exciting play-based curriculum that balances child-initiated exploration with teacher-guided activities. This approach ensures each child’s development is both stimulated and nurtured.

A Rich and Balanced Curriculum
Children participate in regular numeracy and literacy lessons alongside engaging topic work and child-led play in dedicated play areas and playgrounds. The curriculum includes weekly swimming, PE, and French lessons.

Our topic-based approach offers a diverse range of learning opportunities tailored to stimulate and develop children’s interests. A high teacher-to-pupil ratio ensures each child progresses at their own pace, supported by positive reinforcement and celebrated achievements through certificates and praise.

Specialist Teaching and Outdoor Learning
French, music, and PE are taught by specialist teachers from the Prep School, giving children an early advantage in developing these essential skills. Learning extends beyond the classroom, with integral outdoor areas for each room, providing additional dimensions to their education.

The nature garden, forest school, and adventure playground further encourage exploration, creativity, and activity in the exciting world around them. Educational visits to farms, zoos, forests, museums, libraries, and other places of interest enrich the academic curriculum and create memorable learning experiences.

A Welcoming Open-Door Policy
We operate an open-door policy, providing parents with the opportunity to discuss the day’s activities or any questions directly with staff. In addition, we regularly host open classroom events, where parents are invited to join us. These occasions allow children to proudly share their achievements, fostering a strong connection between school and home.

Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to create a safe, caring, and stimulating environment where every child can grow, develop, and flourish at their own pace.
